The leading role of our beauty case is rightfully awarded to the mascara. Although the competition with the blush is, was, and always will be very close, the mascara wins because on the one hand, it can transform us with one swipe and on the other it is the best selling beauty product in the world. The market is filled with tons of products promising to gove volume, length, curve or even all of the above to our lashes and they cost between €10 and €30. Naturally, we have high expectations from the more expensive mascaras. But what about the cheaper ones? What can we expect from those? Seeing as the aforementioned market and our pockets are going through an economic crisis, I decided to do a crash –lash- test and try 10 of the more popular cheap mascaras in Greece in order to decide whether they keep their promises. Here are my  results.

1 Name: The Falsies by Maybelline New York

  • The promise: Eight times more volume than the regular mascara of the same brand and a false lash effect. Pros: Outstanding volume with just 2 coats. The Falsies can compete with any expensive mascara brand. Cons: If you rub your eyes it will smudge instantaneously. Plus: The curved brush that covers a wide area of the lashes and distributes the product evenly. Perfect for: Tin and short lashes. Score: 5/5

2 Name: False Lash Effect by Max Factor.

  • The promise : Fake Lash volume and natural effect. Pros: It does deliver great volume and it’s brush separates the lashes perfectly without creating knots. Cons: The big brush does separate the upper lashes but because of its size it can smudge the lower lashes. Plus: It lasted longer than all the mascaras we used. Perfect for: Short and straight lashes. Score: 5/5

3 Name: The Colossal by Maybelline New York.

  • The promise: Colossal volume with one coat. Pros: The huge brush that distributes the product very well. Also the long hair on the brush will most definitely not smudge the lower lashes. Cons: It runs out relatively quickly and you might need a second coat for a really stunning effect. Plus: The waterproof version will not smudge even if you pray for it. Perfect for: Sparse and straight lashes. Score: 4/5

  • The promise: Extreme length. Pros: Great length, separation and even if it does not claim it it gives some volume too. Cons: If you use it in a hurry you might smudge the inner corner of your eye due to the extra long brush. Plus: Very lightweight formula. I forgot I had it on. Perfect for: Short and unruly lashes. Score: 4/5

5 Name: Extra Volume Collagen by L’ Oreal.

  • The promise: great volume. Pros: it’s creamy, it delivers intense color and satisfying volume. Cons: It does not deliver extreme volume but the intensity of the color balances it perfectly. Plus: The huge brush that combs the lashes. I kept it after it finished the product. Perfect for: Light colored and sparse lashes. Score: 4/5

6 Name: Coup de Theatre by Bourjois.

  • The promise : Length, volume and dramatic effect. Pros: It gives length and it comes in a dazzling array of colors. Κατά: It does deliver length but not the expected volume. However the shades compensate because we couldn’t find so many in any other brand. Plus: The shades of course, seriously, they’re amazing.
