Thank God, I am not alone!

Beauty, Did you know this? | Nasia Asimakopoulou | Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009 at 09:13

When I woke up last Sunday I couldn’t even bring myself to look on the mirror. The dark circles under my eyes made me look like a raccoon to say the least. The Dalai Lama inside me wants to whip out the Zen and say “Unfortunately I am not the only one who has to deal with such problems”…the real Nasia however will shout “Thank God I am not alone in this!”. I am not being cynical, I am a realist. If dark under eye circles hadn’t been such a huge problem for so many women, then we wouldn’t have such an abundance of good, specialized products designed with one and only purpose to hide them. Of course I am referring to concealers.

But I think it is time to actually do get a little cynical. Who said that concealers are miracle workers? The fact that we bought a concealer doesn’t mean that it will do its job. Is it the right color? Has it been applied correctly? But don’t let me get carried away. The truth is that not all of us are makeup artists (I certainly am not) and another truth is that unless we are colorblind, whichever concealer we use it will conceal the problem to some extend. But why not erase the problem altogether? Just avoid the mistakes below and success is guaranteed.

Bid farewell to the raccoon look

For a long time I thought that since the circles are dark I had to cover them with something very light. Mistake No 1. Indeed, the concealer needs to be lighter than our natural skin tone in order to work but not too light. You see, the skin under the eyes is very thin so the blue of the veins shows through. A very light colored concealer will slightly improve the discoloration of the skin but the darker colors will still show through. The perfect shade is 1-2 tones lighter that your skin tone. Also, some women may need to blend different shades in order to get the one that’s perfect. That is what concealer palettes are for and you can find them in any cosmetics store.

However, even when I actually found the right shade of concealer for me, my dark circles continued to show after I put it on. Mistake No 2.

The wrong application was to blame, not the product. What I did was put the concealer under my eyes and then blend it by rubbing it on the skin. All I managed to do was to transfer the product on my fingers. The right way to put on concealer is by dabbing it on the skin with your middle or ring finger until it blends and do so on the upper lid as well to ensure a uniform color. Add a little powder on top and the result will last for hours.
It was as simple as that. The only things you need in order to avoid the “raccoon look” is the right color and a decent technique. And one last tip: when shopping for a concealer always try the product in daylight before you buy it, store lighting is very deceitful.
