Alice in Wonderland

Tim Burton is preparing his new film. It will be «Alice in Wonderland». Alice viewed from a different perspective, the “weird” perspective of the director, which gives it a more dynamic and girlish role, in a totally different context and placed facing Helena Bonham Carter (as The Red Queen) and Johnny Depp (as The Mad Hatter).

The photoshoot
Annie Leibovitz published in Vogue her latest photographs on the same theme, «the Adventures of Alice in Wonderland», with a more surreal view, the one of an artist and not just a photographer.

Leibovitz photographed Alice (played by Natalia Vodianova), together with famous designers (Karl Lagerfeld, Viktor & Rolf, Jean Paul Gaultier, Helmut Lang, Olivier Theyskens, Tom Ford, John Galliano, Nicolas Ghesquière & Donatella, Christian Lacroix and Marc Jacobs). Alice was dressed by each designer and photographed in a scenery out of Wonderland.

The surreal
These are the facts. The fable is known. Classic. Classic fairy tale. But not so clasic when ones comes to think of it.

Alice, running behind a late rabbit and drinking a liquid whic makes her tall and big , playing cricket with “cards” to save her head from the irrational demands of the Red Queen, talking with a cat that thinks we are all crazy, keeping a baby that turns into a pig, hearing the story of a mock-turtle that was once a genuine-turtle and celebrating her un-birthday in a supposedly mad-tea-party.

Paranoid Art
This paranoia will be displayed through the Burton film in March 2010 and this surrealism that emerges from the story of Lewis Carroll is reflected in Leibovitz’s photos in Vogue’s editorial.

Burton’s and Leibovitz’s photography is so colorful and fairy that it feels like it is taken off a child’s imagination. When we were children we read the fairy tales. Now that we are grown we browse movies and magazines. Fortunately some of us combine them… fortunately successfully.

Only a dream…?
“ Wake up, Alice dear ! ” said her sister. “ Why, what a long sleep
you’ve had ! ”
“ Oh, I’ve had such a curious dream ! ” said Alice. And she told her
sister, as well as she could remember them, all these strange Adventures
of hers that you have just been reading about ; and, when she had
finished, her sister kissed her, and said “ It was a curious dream, dear,
certainly ; but now run in to your tea : it’s getting late. ” So Alice got up
and ran off, thinking while she ran, as well she might, what a wonder-
ful dream it had been.
