When writing about pockets it is very easy to use sexist jokes to grab attention. However, this is not our goal. Pockets are one of the most misunderstood accessories in men’s fashion, due to the liberal understanding of their usage.

Since it was just a small bag hanging from the belts of the people in the Middle Ages until its modern version being sewn inside a pair of trousers or on a shirt, a pocket carries the most important objects of our everyday life: home and car keys, cash and coins, mobile phone, pens, paper notes, receipts, cigarettes, lighters and our hands in moments of embarrassment.

How important is the role of pockets in our lives can be seen only when we purchase a pair of pants with sewn pockets; the loss of easy use really bothers the male customer. However, this convenience is what leads to pockets’ abuse and its ridiculous results. Remember: pockets are not “Transformers”.

Different pockets for different uses…

The padded pocket, which has lead to many jokes, is one of the biggest faux pas in men’s fashion and in our times where first impressions rule our social and professional relationships, the proper use of a pocket is required. To help you avoid these stylistic accidents, we gathered a very simple user guide that is divided according to the most common types of pockets:

  • External chest pocket (shirt or jacket): its presence is purely decorative, unless you want to insert a thin and delicate handkerchief. You are strictly prohibited from using it for carrying your wallet, cigarettes, documents and cards, because it loses its form.
  • Internal chest pocket (jacket or coat): in this pocket you can carry small personal documents (passport, identity card) or pens.
  • Trouser pockets: their use depends on the style and fabric of the trousers, although -generally speaking- the rule of «one item per pocket» applies here: mobile phone in the right pocket, cash in the left pocket, wallet in the back right pocket and business cards in the back left pocket. But if your daily objects are known for their size, it is preferable to select an everyday bag. The only exception to the rule is the pockets of the military-style trousers, because they are designed in such a way that he who wears them can bear all his necessities without employing his hands (one of the few times that usability tramps style).
