Hussein Chalayan Exhibition

In my opinion, the Turkish-Cypriot Hussein Chalayan is not a fashion designer but an art designer. He is around for 15 years already and twice awarded with the British Designer of Year Award (1999 & 2000).
All these 15 years of exceptional artistic creation wanted the London’s Design Museum to honor by opening the first comprehensive presentation of thw designer’s work and by this way he is indirectly recognized as something more than just a fashion designer.
The innovations, and full risk in each presentation, experiments, the pioneering use of materials, the meticulous patterns and the extensive use of technology make his work a case study of technique, aesthetics and technology.
His work is inspired by social issues, such as the cultural identity and differentiation, and the immigration.
The report will include, amongst others, the following collections:
After Words – A/W 2000: in this project the furnitures transform to wearable items. The table converts to a skirt and the chairs to suitcases. An even more strong and direct connection between architecture and fashion.

Airborne – A/W 2007: the use of Swarovski and over 15.000 pieces from LEDs, in combination with the inspiration from the four seasons, leads to the really astonishing result of a “luming” dress and to a pioneering -for the world of fashion- combination of technology and aesthetics.

Readings – S/S 2008: dresses including above 200 laser lights presenting a magnificent result. Anothers result of the use of technology as a basic “insrument” for creation.

The exhibition, which opened its doors on 22nd of January and will last till the 17th of May, naturally follows a successfull 2008 while the PPR has already added in her team the designer but also in the same month (February the ’08), Chalayan becomes the creative director of Puma.
